Seoul nightlife guide: Gangnam clubs, private karaoke and casinos in one night
Nights in Seoul start late and run until morning. This guide covers where to go, when things happen, and how to fit a few places into one night.

In short
- Clubs fill up after midnight and usually keep going until around dawn.
- Bring your passport. Venues check ID, and the legal age is 19, counted by birth year.
- Smart casual works almost everywhere. A few places do not allow slippers.
- The subway stops around midnight, so plan your ride home before you go out.
Where to go
Gangnam is where most visitors with a bigger budget spend the night. Cheongdam and Apgujeong have the well-known clubs, cocktail lounges and high-end karaoke. Around Gangnam Station the crowd is bigger and louder.
Itaewon is the most international area, with bars and clubs where English is spoken everywhere. Hongdae is younger and more casual, with live music and smaller clubs.
How one night can run
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 19:30 | Dinner, often Korean beef in a private room |
| 21:30 | A casino to start the night |
| 00:00 | A private karaoke room |
| 02:00 | A club table in Cheongdam, or a late bite before bed |
Most guests start at the casino and go on to karaoke or a club afterwards. You do not have to do all four: pick two or three and stay longer where you are having fun.
The rules that matter
- Passport. Clubs and karaoke venues check ID, and a photo on your phone is not enough.
- Age. The legal age is 19, counted by birth year: you qualify from 1 January of the year you turn 19.
- Casinos in Seoul are for foreign passport holders only.
- Door policy. Some clubs choose who they let in. A booked table makes the door much easier.
Getting home
The subway generally runs until around midnight. After that, taxis are hard to find at closing time in nightlife areas, and late at night fares carry a surcharge of up to 40%. A car that waits outside each place saves the queue and takes you back to your hotel whenever you are done.
